Project Overview

Under the rules of the competition and feasible ergonomic conditions, a ground plan was made. With the ground plan as a reference, a Solidworks model of the vehicle was created and optimized from analysis using Ansys software. A prototype of the model was put together on a real scale. Based on concepts of concurrent engineering, simultaneous work was carried by the various sub-teams. A drive train was constructed based on the torque requirements for rugged terrain and the limiting speed conditions of the competition. The steering geometry was designed according to the Ackerman principle and to balance the effects of caster and camber. The required braking force for the car was calculated, and the braking system was installed with the ability to lock all four wheels at speed, as stated in the SAE rulebook. Make or Buy decisions were made at each step based on the weight, cost, and performance. A clear trade-off of was drawn between the ideal Factor of  Safety (FOS) and weight at each step of the design. All work in the design and fabrication of the vehicle was done in compliance with the rules of the competition and centered on good engineering practices.
